The Morning the Lake Goes Glass

By The hosts

I'm going to let you in on the best-kept secret at Kendall's Point, and it costs you nothing but an alarm clock.

Set it for first light. Not because you have to do anything - you don't. Just shuffle down to the dock with a coffee and watch what happens to the lake.

The hour nobody's awake for

There's a stretch right after the sun crests the trees when Gunn Lake goes completely, impossibly still. No wind. No boats. The water turns into a mirror so flawless you can't tell where the shoreline ends and its reflection begins. The far treeline shows up twice, once in the air and once in the water, and it's hard to convince your eyes which one is real.

The locals call it the lake going to glass. It doesn't last. By mid-morning a breeze finds the bay and the surface breaks into that familiar sparkle. But for that first hour, you get something most people never see.

What you'll actually notice

First, the sound - or rather, the lack of it. The quiet out here at dawn is the kind that makes your ears ring a little until they adjust. Then you start picking out the small stuff: a fish dimpling the surface, a loon somewhere across the bay clearing its throat, the drip off the dock.

Then the mist. On cool mornings, thin ribbons of fog drift across the warm water like the lake is breathing. It burns off as the sun climbs, but for a while it's pure theatre, and you've got front-row seats in your pajamas.

The dock at dawn is the cheapest therapy in Northwest Ontario, and the only side effect is wanting to come back.

A small ritual worth keeping

Folks who've stayed here a few times all develop the same habit without meaning to. First one up makes the coffee, walks it down to the water, and just sits. No phone - there's barely any signal anyway. No agenda. Just the lake waking up.

It becomes the thing people quietly look forward to most. Bigger than the fishing, bigger than the fire. A few minutes alone with a glass lake before the day, the kids, and the cooler get going.

So when you're here, do yourself a favor. Pick one morning - just one - and beat the sun to the dock. I promise it's the photo you'll keep, and the memory that pulls you back next year.
